In the recent jubileum issue of Gedragstherapie van den Hout stated that cognitive bias modification (CBM) is theoretically sound, but does not work in practice, referring to meta-analyses of Cristea and collegues in the domains of anxiety and addiction. However, both meta-analyses have been strongly criticized. Regarding anxiety, CBM does have clinically relevant effects in case the cognitive bias is successfully changed, and not when this is not the case. Clinical studies typically fall in the first class, online studies in the second. In addiction, effects in students not motivated to change are small and short-lived, but consistent positive effects have been found in clinical trials in which CBM is added to CBT in patients motivated to change. Therefore the conclusion that CBM has no added value for CBT is incorrect.
