Šiuo straipsniu apibūdinami XVII a. valdovų, pradedant Zigmantu III (1587-1632) ir baigiant Jonu III Sobieskiu (1674-1696), įvaizdžiai politinėje LDK vaizduotėje. Lenkijos- Lietuvos karaliai. Straipsnyje analizuojamos idealaus valdovo alegorijos, karališko kūno ir politinio kūno ryšys, valdovų charakterių apibūdinimai anuometinėje visuomenėje. Daug vietos straipsnyje skiriama retorikai, kadangi retorika buvo esminė viešo Lenkijos-Lietuvos gyvenimo dalis. XVII a. valdovai poliarizavo viešą nuomone. Karališka propaganda ir karalių rėmėjai, kurių nebuvo daug, idealizavo ir glorifikavo monarchus. Valdovų oponentai vadino juos tironais. Pabrėždami valdovo kūno ir politinio kūno ryšį, XVII a. raštininkai dažnai vartojo dviejų karaliaus kūnų įvaizdį. The paper describes the images of the 17th c. rulers, starting with Sigismund III Vasa (1587–1632) and finishing with John III Sobieski (1674–1696), in the political imagination of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). Referring to forgotten texts of that period, such as orations, sermons, memoirs, letters, testaments and panegyrics, we reconsider ways of depicting and imagining the Polish-Lithuanian kings of the 17th c. The paper analyses the allegories of an ideal sovereign, the relationship of the royal body and political body, descriptions of sovereigns’ characters in the then society. The paper focuses on rhetoric, because it was the essential part of the public Polish-Lithuanian life. The 17th c. sovereigns polarised public opinion. Royal propaganda and kings’ supporters, who were not many, idealised and glorified the monarchs. Sovereigns’ opponents called them tyrants. Noting the relationship of the sovereign’s body and the political body, the scribes of the 17th c. often used the image of two bodies of a king. According to them, the health of the Republic depended on the king’s health. When describing the king’s place in the state, he was compared to the head atop and controlling the political body. The study claims that the symbolism of a body expressed mutual connections between the king and the “noblemen’s nation”. Regarding the natural body of kings and the descriptions of sovereigns’ sexual behaviour in the then literature, it could be stated that the latter were used to destroy royal authority. Although differently interpreted, the royal authority and royal personalities were never treated as a marginal problem of political life. Being the symbolical centres of social action, the royal figures aroused and affected the imagination of noblemen.
