Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior The aim of this study was to analyze the postharvest losses of four tuberous roots: yellow Peruvian root, sweet potato, red beet and carrot, during the marketing in supermarkets of Guanhães/MG city. The study was conducted in two supermarkets, A and B, which purchase the products from the same wholesale distributor. Supermarkets had similar size, but the supermarket B stocked the produces in cold storage room and the display on the shelves was done according to the sales. In order to obtain the data, it was followed up the practices at wholesaler and on the retail shelves, assessing the conditions during arrival at the time of purchase and at the moment of discard, by characterizing and quantifying the damage, according to the standards practiced by the Brazilian Program for Modernization of Horticulture CQH-CEAGESP in two periods, the winter and summer. The losses of yellow Peruvian root and carrot were higher in the summer for the grocery store A, which may be due to the high temperatures and humidity. Losses of sweet potato were higher during winter and in the supermarket B. The low humidity during this period may have favored the withering, leading to higher losses. Losses of red beets were bigger during winter and in the supermarket A. The differences between the losses in the supermarkets are due to storage conditions and exposure of the roots on the shelves.
