Erkan ÇALIŞKAN Ekim-2000 XI SUMMARY THE EFFECTS OF UNILATERAL FORCED NOSTRIL BREATHING ON CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM In the present study, we investigated the effect of unilateral forced nostril breathing on systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate during exercise in 129 (88 males and 41 females) students from Physical Education and Sports Academy of Atatürk University. First, the nasal dominances were determined. Then, measurements were made at rest and after 6 minutes running with the two nostrils open, with the right nostril closed (RNC) and with the left nostril closed (LNC). We had the athletes run with 30 % maximum rate. On right nostril dominant students; by closing right nostril (RNC), systolic blood pressure and heart rate increased but diastolic blood pressure didn't change. The close of the left nostril (LNC) didn't affect the blood pressure, but it increased heart rate. On left nostril dominant students the close of left nostril (LNC) increased systolic pressure and heart rate, but diastolic pressure didn't change. The close of right nostril (RNC) didn't affect blood pressure, but pulses increased. These result showed that the close of dominant nostril increased systolic blood pressure. So, to prevent high blood pressure during the exercise, the dominant nostril should be healthy. We may say that, making forceful nostril respiration with nondominant nostrils stimulates sempatic nervous system. Right or left nostril breathings don't affect diastolic blood pressure. Unilateral forced nostril breathing has effects especially on heart. Both nostril breathings in hard situations increased the heart rate. Erkan ÇALIŞKAN October-2000 70
