BackgroundVisual evoked potentials (VEP) are electrophysiologic responses to stimulation by patterned visual stimuli such as checkerboard pattern reversal. The measurement of VEPs is an important tool in the diagnosis of demyelinating diseases. So called CRT-monitors are currently used as stimulus in the VEP examination but they are no longer made and due to technical improvement LCD-monitors became more powerful and also more affordable. Since there is a lack of data about this LCD-monitors it is necessary to compare the monitors and determine new standard values. Methods: The VEPs of 18 healthy adults were measured with the CRT- and LCD-Monitor as stimulus. The eyes were stimulated by checkerboard pattern reversal. The test was performed monocular, full field VEP with 50 and 15 arcminute check size. According to the International 10-20 System four EEG electrodes were placed on the probands heads. The positions of the electrodes were Fz, O1, Oz and O2 whence the result was a three channel lead. The subjects participated voluntarily, have been healthy and most importantly did not suffer from any kind of demyelinating disease (e.g. multiple sclerosis). Refractive errors were not a disqualifier as long as they were compensated with glasses or corrective lenses. Results: The results from 16 subjects show that the biggest difference in measurement with both monitors is found in the P100-latency. Latency is prolonged up to 8 ms for stimulation with the LCD-monitor compared to the results with the CRT-monitor. This result is seen at both 15' and 50'.ConclusionStatistically, there is no normal distribution of the group of subjects, which means that the data are not generally valid. This should be addressed and additional measurements should be performed on test subjects to confirm the trends obtained and to establish generally valid normal values.
