Stress Wave Response of Carbon Composite Materials

Composite materials of carbon arranged in a three dimensional (3D) pattern generally attenuated stress waves faster and resisted damage significantly better than composite materials arranged in a two dimensional (2D) PATTERN. In addition, both 2D and 3D MATERIALS THAT WERE DENSIFIED WITH PHENOLIC RESIN AS WELL AS SUBJECTED TO CARBONIZA-TION AND DENSIFICATION WITH FURFURYL ALCOHOL ATTENUATED STRESS WAVES FASTER THAN MATERIALS ONLY DENSIFIED WITH PHENOLIC RESIN. The 2D materials consisted of layers of WYB 85-1/2 graphite yarn woven in bundles perpendicular to the direction of the impact. The 3D materials consisted of graphite bundles arranged parallel to the direction of impact as well as perpendicular to it. Stress wave damage modes and levels were determined visually and microscopically, stress wave attenuation was determined by using front surface and in- material carbon composition piezoresistive gages, and property degradation was determined in dynamic three-point bending.
