Three Marsh Harrier’s (Circus aeruginosus) nests were monitored during the breeding season at two lakes in the Mazurian Lakeland of NE Poland. Female Harriers visited the nests more often than males and stayed with their nestlings much longer than males. At all nesting sites, the main prey delivered to young Marsh Harriers were Microtus voles (56% of all prey items) and other rodents (12.5%). However, the composition of the Marsh Harrier’s diet differed significantly among the three nests. Waterfowl and the domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus) constituted 71% of the biomass consumed. No significant differences were recorded between prey items delivered to the nests by males and females. However, some prey, such as the Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), Coot (Fulica atra) and young brown hares (Lepus europaeus), were brought to the nests only by females. The overall prey biomass delivered to nestlings by females was approximately five times larger than that delivered by males. The diet composition determined from carcass analysis and via observations differed significantly from the data obtained from pellet analysis.
