Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have become, in the past few years, a fundamental part of the Digital Transformation of industries, cities, or agriculture, just to name a few. Their ability to autoconfigure without human intervention, and to wirelessly relay data within the WSN an to the Internet, make them very useful to exploit untapped sources of information, in order to create new knowledge that could better processes, city services, etc. In this thesis, a WSN will be developed using a simulation tool known as Cooja. The nodes that compose it will be provided with mechanisms, CoAP in this case, to display the data they obtain from its sensors, so other tools, external to the WSN, can benefit from it. Then, these external tools will be used to illustrate the process of extracting and processing the data originated in the WSN, with the final objective of creating knowledge and value from it. Lastly, an analysis of how the WSN behaves under different medium conditions and node configurations will be carried out. This work will prove why the WSNs have become so popular, while also showing that their design is a difficult process in which many factors have to be taken into account if one wants to perform a successful deployment. But, most importantly, it will show the symbiosis that is established between the physical world of the WSN (data source) and the digital world of the IT tools (data destination). This association is one of the mainstays of the Digital Transformation.
