Alzheimerova bolest je oblik progresivne demencije koju prate simptomi moždane atrofije. Suvišnom oksidacijom proteina koja je uzrokovana slobodnim radikalima dolazi do patoloških promjena na mozgu. Alzheimerovu bolest karakteriziraju senilni plakovi i neurofibrilarni čvorovi na mozgu. Uslijed oksidacije proteina i nitriranja tirozina aktivnost enzima koji sudjeluju u važnim metaboličkim procesima se smanjuje, što dovodi do neurodegeneracije koja je karakteristična za Alzheimerovu bolest. ; Alzheimer's disease is a form of progressive dementia with symptoms of brain atrophy. Excessive protein oxidation caused by free radicals leads to pathological changes in the brain. Alzheimer's disease is characterized by senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. Due to protein oxidation and nitration of tyrosine, activity of enzymes involved in important metabolic processes is reduced, which leads to neurodegeneration characteristic for Alzheimer's disease.
