Sport injuries of Chiang Mai University athletes and sport medicine management in The 44th University Sports of Thailand, academic year 2017

Objective This study aimed to describe the data of sports injuries and sport medicine management of Chiang Mai University’ athletes in the 44th University Sports of Thailand, 2017. Methods The study reported and analyzed data of sports injuries and sport medicine management of 236 CMU athletes (142 men, 94 women) who participated in 21 types of sports were collected for descriptive analysis (i.e., frequency, percentage). Results Analytic report found that top five of on-field sport injuries mainly occurred in taekwondo (57.94%), rugby (14.96%), hockey (10.28%), basketball (8.41%) and jujutsu (3.74%). Most of the injury parts were the region of thigh, ankle, knee, wrist & hand, leg and arm, respectively. Majority of on field managements were cryotherapy, sport taping, sport massage, stretching, and cooling spray. For treatment service at the CMU Medicinal Clinical Service Center, top five of sports that were treated including rugby (28.55%), hockey (21.15%), swimming (13.78%), taekwondo (9.62%) and volleyball (8.65%). Most of the regions that were treated comprising ankle, shoulder, leg, knee and thigh, respectively. Most kinds of management methods at the CMU Medicinal Clinical Service Center were cryotherapy, therapeutic ultrasound, stretching, sport taping, sport massage and therapeutic exercises, etc. Conclusion Majority of sport injuries occurred in the collision contact sports. Lower extremities were the major parts of body, which were reported for injuries. The main treatments that the athletes received were cryotherapy, sport taping, manual therapy techniques and exercises. Therefore, descriptive patterns of sport injuries and treatment programs are crucial for sport medicine in both of man power preparation and sport injury management.
