There is ongoing stigma, discrimination, and minority stress associated with being a gender and sexuality diverse minority around the world. It is crucial to reflect on the ongoing systemic barriers and power imbalances these communities face when engaging with the CJS. This chapter discusses the terminology associated with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, including defining lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer or questioning (LGBTIQ+) people. The differences and intersections between gender, sex, and sexuality are explored in the context of the CJS. A brief historical overview of the relations between the CJS and LGBTIQ+ communities is presented. The chapter provides context through examples from different Western societies, including Australia and the United States of America. Readers will develop an understanding of the critical principles of inclusive and respectful practices in the CJS for working with and advocating for gender and sexuality diverse individuals and communities.
