Modern lace-making was promoted by Sara Hadley (1860–1927), a famous lacemaker in the United States. Modern lace was made by women daily, especially in the 1900s, often as a gift for Christmas. Previous studies indicate that while ready-made products were becoming popular in people’s lives at that time, handwork at home was valued and handmade Christmas gifts were preferred. However, the act of gifting handmade lace at Christmas has not been researched in detail. This study considers how the gifting of modern lace for Christmas was featured in women’s magazines. It was found that modern lace was a suitable Christmas gift from mothers, since it demonstrated a mother’s affection for her family members. Furthermore, the gifting of modern lace was related to education to help her daughter acquire ideal behavior. ; departmental bulletin paper
