It is important for youth development and well-being to be able to travel on your own but despite this independent mobility has decreased heavily during the last couple of years. This is an even bigger challenge in less urbanized areas, where youth face a higher degree of transport poverty than cities. They are therefore more dependent on adults' help to transport themselves in order to get by in everyday life, which means that their independent mobility is limited. This also leads to many journeys being made by car, which is negative as a reduced dependence on fossil fuels is crucial for a sustainable future. It also means less sustainable travel in the long term, as one's adult travel habits are largely formed while growing up. This essay examines the role of public transport in young people's leisure time in the municipality of Lerum, as well as how it can enable more independent travel for young people in less urbanized areas. This has been done through a survey aimed at young people at Lerum's high school and subsequent in-depth interviews. The results show that public transport plays an important role for many young people and that most use public transport regularly. It also shows that public transport competes with other means of transport which are perceived to be more flexible. Being driven by a parent is common in the municipality, around 60 percent of young people are driven at least two days a week. Many respondents feel that they have no alternative when it comes to choosing a means of transport, which shows the limitations that exist. The dominance of the car is also clearly shown by the fact that over half of the respondents and interviewees see themselves using a car if they had the choice.
