Imanat Ali Khan came to Canada at the age of 25 in 1912. Family members of his had come to Vancouver and San Francisco as early as 1907. In Punjab his family owned land and Khan had been a wrestler. He came via Manila on a Japanese ship. The trip took three months. When they arrived in Manila he learned that there was a requirement that immigrants stay six months in Manila before proceeding to Canada. Khan had a relative in Manila who gave him his papers so that he could go on right away. The name on his passport said Babbar Ali. His father lived in Hong Kong at that time. His brother also came to Hong Kong with 6 other Sikhs. A number of people from Khan’s district served in the British Artillery and Police stationed in Hong Kong, and eventually settled there. Khan traveled with 25-30 other Indian people. They started their journey from their district, Ludhiana. It took 3 days by train to reach Calcutta. From Calcutta they went by ship to Hong Kong, Manila, Seattle, and docking in Portland. From there they went to Astoria, Oregon, to work in a mill. They were paid $2 a day. They lived on their own or lived in shared houses of four people. At that time people crossed the Canada/US border on foot. In winter they came to Vancouver and worked in Fraser Mills. About 7-800 Indian people were working in the mill. Wages were lower in Canada than America. There was cookhouse and bunk houses where groups of 15-20 people lived together. Sikhs and Muslims had different cooks. There were very few Hindus in Canada at that time. He worked in Fraser Mills for 2 years, 1912-14. In 1914 the mills were shut down. Many people returned to India due to the dearth of work. Khan and three others went to California on invitation from their relatives. They crossed the American border by hiding or bribing the immigration officers. They crossed the border by foot, spending the night hiding in the woods near the border. Early in the morning the crossed the border, then spent the day at a white saloon. At night they set out again and walked 8-10 miles. They would find a farmer’s house to stay at during the days. There a person from low caste of the community, a Marasi, told that he will not talk with the Sikh person Khan was traveling with, and would just take him to where there were other Sikh people. From there he went to Astoria, Oregon, then Sacramento, California, where he worked on a white farm. His house there was burned down, so he moved 2-3 miles away with the rest of the Indian workers. Five of them together purchased a tractor and took a lease on some land to start farming. Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus lived together. Khan also did some wrestling for the entertainment of the community. The community began to publish a Ghadar newspaper. The Governor General of Canada came to Vancouver and met with the Indian community. Bhag Singh, a Priest of the Vancouver Gurdwara, and Bhagwan Singh, who came here to fight for the freedom of India, were their leaders. Kartar Singh Sarabha, a student working in a mill in Astoria, Oregon, went with the Ghadar Party. Lala Hardyal then led the community. The Ghadar Party’s head office was in San Francisco. They donated to the party. Bhagwan Singh was forcefully deported and sent by ship back to Yokohama. Later he was hanged in some other country. There was a Bengali person who ran a school in mill side. He was deported and went to Seattle, where he opened another school. Udai Ram was a manager in the mill and had a shop in mill side. A person named Gurdit Kumar used to have a newspaper called Sudesh Sevak. A lawyer named Teja Singh fought the case of Bhag Singh’s wife in Ottawa. At that time there were Gurdwaras in Vancouver, Fraser Mills and Victoria. At the time of Komagata Maru incident [1914] he was in Canada. From mill side they went and saw the ship docked. Passengers of the ship were not allowed to land even those who came earlier were allowed to land. They donated money for the passengers, and leaders from the Indian community interceded with Ottawa and Victoria. From 1912- 1932 Khan lived in Canada and America. In 1932 he went back to India and got married there. Then until 1976 he lived in Pakistan; in 1979 he came back to California, then he settled in Canada.
