The reduction in the modulus of asphalt that takes place as cracking occurs under loading of the Texas Mobile Load Simulator (TxMLS) was studied through spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW). Tests on a recycled asphalt overlay also showed that deterioration through cracking and subsequent stripping of the underlying residual layer of lightweight aggregate asphalt, could be tracked with SASW. These findings demonstrated that SASW could provide insight into the performance of the asphalt under traffic loading at project as well as network level. As an interim guide, a drop to 70 % of the initial value should be taken as a signal to do a diagnostic investigation. A drop to 50 % could mean irreversible damage. Tools are already available to do SASW on a routine basis. 1.
