Operator of rail vehicles expect the industry to guarantee not only for high reliability and availability for newly developed products, but more and more also for low life cycle costs. Until now the purchase price of vehicles had the highest priority and was the essential competition criteria for vehicle suppliers. Today the focus of attention shifted to other values, such as those described by the term RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability and safety), which is used in specifications, bidding and contracts for the range of system features, as well as LCC (life cycle costs). The following article illustrates the procedure and results of joint reliability work. It also explains how additional knowledge gained during operating result in corrections of technology, design and comfort of the vehicles of series 481.
