Alain (1868-1951) is often considered as a rationalist thinker, ie a lay philosopher who believes that reason will enlighten our understanding of the world, wiping out old ages superstitions incarnated by the Catholic Church. Though widely accepted, this interpretation is only partly true, for the development of Alain's philosophy shows that reason is not only a power of self-emancipation. It also represents new forms of alienation. Driven, like all his French contemporaries, to identify reason with science, Alain cannot but conclude from the experience of WWI that the outcome of science is massive destruction weapons, not only technical progress. Second, The experience of political rationalization demonstrates that rational organization also leads to domination. Eventually, what is needed is faith in reason, which is not based on reason, but on free good will.
