La biologie du stress fait intervenir de nombreux systèmes biologiques. Les auteurs montrent le rôle des noyaux gris du lobe temporal, hippocampe et amygdale, puis la place du système nerveux autonome et de l'axe corticotrope ainsi que du système immunitaire. Enfin, la biologie ne peut être séparée des cognitions dont le rôle apparaît clairement aux limites du stress et de l'anxiété pathologique, dans le syndrome de stress post-traumatique.
