This article is a first-hand account of the events and actions onboard HMS Nottingham following her grounding. It details the various problems that occurred as a result of the incident some of which were exacerbated by leaking hatch closures and bulkhead glands. Of particular interest is how these were overcome bythe ingenuity of the ship's personnel, often operating in the most difficult of circumstances, in the best traditions of the service. Perhaps the most important aspect of the entire operation is that the ship was probably prevented from becoming atotal loss due to the thorough training the Royal Navy provides to its personnel.
