Suncor has been mining oil sand at its existing mine since 1967 on leases located west of the Athabasca River. These reserves will be exhausted in the year 2001 at current production rates and, as a result, a new mine has been opened and is in production - the Steepbank Mine. Construction of this project started in 1996 and is due to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 1998. With such a tight frame, it was necessary to come up with cost effective, innovative solutions to the unique challenges presented by this project. Initiatives undertaken have included building a multi-purpose bridge, developing a new material handling process, taking advantage of the area's natural geology for construction purposes, and developing an execution strategy for dealing with multiple contractors concurrently. The mine is now in production with the new ore preparation plant and the support facilities for the mine also operational. Early test results have been promising and Suncor is looking forward to realizing its future through the Steepbank Mine.
