Synthesis and structure of heterometallic cluster complexes. Reaction of imido complex LWRu2(CO)8(μ-H)(μ3-NPh), L=Cp and Cp*, with the tungsten acetylide complex CpW(CO)3C≡CPh

The triruthenium imido cluster Ru3(CO)10(μ3-NPh) reacts with tungsten hydrides LW(CO)3H to give heterometallic imido clusters LWRu2(CO)8(μ-H)(μ3-NPh) (2, L = Cp; 3,L = Cp*) via the process of metal-metal exchange. Treatment of the imido clusters 2 and 3 with tungsten acetylide CpW(CO)3 C≡CPh produces a novel tetranuclear imidoalkyne complex LCpW2Ru2(CO)6(μ-NPh)(μ-η2-CH=CPh) (4, L = Cp; 5, L = Cp*). The structures of 2 and 5 have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystal data for 2: space group Cc.
