This presentation is going to summarise the recent developments of the European noise abatement policy and the consequences for the railway sector. Firstly, noise generation limiting regulations are reviewed and first experiences with the use of TSI-CR-Noise and TSI-HST-VEH are discussed. However, the focus lies on the activities to retrofit the existing noisy rolling stock and the discussion on the EU Commission's communication Rail noise abatement addressing the existing fleet, that has been recently published on 8th July 2008.
