Les quelque 500 unités industrielles du bassin du Souss-Massa, largement dominées par des industries légères et des entreprises de petite taille basées sur la valorisation des ressources agricoles et halieutiques locales, déversent majoritairement leurs effluents dans la baie d'Agadir au Maroc. Une étude menée sur les rejets d'une conserverie montre qu'ils sont fortement chargés en matières organiques biodégradables, avec un taux de matière en suspension très élevé et des concentrations en azote total, phosphore total, huiles et graisses, détergents, Cl', Ca2+ et Na+ qui dépassent dans quelques cas cinquante fois la norme autorisée.
