At the Austrian power station Dürnrohr the flue gas desulfurization is done using the spray absorption process. In a first step about 80 to 90 % of the fly ash is removed by an electric filter. Finally sulphur dioxide is absorbed in a spray absorption tower, giving calcium sulphite and gypsum as reaction products. The flue gas desulfurization product is a dry, fine powder. Due to the amount of calcium hydroxide and fly ash in the powder, the product hardens slowly to a stone-like product when water is added. This product is deposited on the site of the power station. In 2008 the legal conditions have changed in a way that the currently used landfill site can no longer be used. Hence a new landfill had to be planned. The new planned site was the first project which was approved according to this new law in Austria, therefore a lot of open questions had to be answered in full detail. These questions include the characterization of the waste, the necessary control mechanisms, requirements concerning landfill technology and the operation of the landfill. All these topics will be presented in this article.
