The driving force for mining is ultimately profitability. Hole deviation has significant economic impact on mining operations. The adverse economic implications of excessive deviation are manifested as poor fragmentation, low ore recovery and ore dilution. Blasthole deviation is composed of three distinct components: collaring, alignment and trajectory deviation. The main focus of this paper is to investigate the role played by rock geology on trajectory deviation. The field work included the study of visible half barrels in underground drifting and breasting operations, open pits, quarries and rock cuts. The major objective was to cover a wide range of geological conditions. The effects of the various rock mass characteristics have been investigated and discussed in this paper.
