Point operating systems are characterised by short maintenance intervals and a high failure necessitating repairs; the upshot is reduced infrastructure availability. As part of the Innotrack research project, two case studies were undertaken together with Deutsche Bahn AG and the Swedish infrastructure manager Banverket to determine the life cycle costs (LCC) of current point setting systems. Based on an in-depth analysis of the current status as regards points systems, a set of specifications was drawn up taking account of future requirements and with a view to Europe-wide standardisation; applying these specifications would allow for a 30% reduction in LLC.
