The improvement of the energy efficiency is an important and a strategic orientation of Hydro-Quebec. In terms of cumulative reduction of electrical energy, the targets are 8 TWh by 2013 and 11 TWh by 2015. The Technological innovation program of the company contributes also to the development of more energy efficient products and processes. In the first part of this paper, we present two examples on how research on advanced materials can help reducing electrical consumption in two important energy intensive industrial sectors in Quebec: the production of sodium chlorate, a paper bleaching agent and the production of primary aluminum. In the second part, we present a project to produce, by electro-deposition, soft ferromagnetic thick materials having low no-load loss magnetic properties for improving the energy efficiency of distribution transformers.
