Causes of corneal ulceration include infectious agents and trauma. Retained foreign bodies in the conjunctival fornix can traumatize and significantly compromise the integrity of the corneal epithelium and cause corneal ulceration. Patients who present with a corneal lesion in the eye must be given a full eye examination, including direct inspection of conjunctival fornix (conjunctival cul-de-sac) by eversion of the upper eyelid. This is a report of three cases of corneal abrasion with resultant ulceration caused by retained occult foreign bodies in the conjunctival fornix.
