A simple variational approach is proposed to study the CDW pinning by individual impurities, relaxing the strong pinning condition. In three dimensions, the energy in the individual pinning regime is lower than that in the weak pinning regime in all situations compatible to a phase-only theory. The individual pinning mechanism is supported by the numerical simulation results and the «white-line effect» in the x-ray patterns.
