We now show that the OX-22+ cells are mainly to be found among the CD4-CD8- (double-negative, DN) cells. The CD2 antigen also shows differential expression among DN cells and expression of CD2 and OX-22 determinants allowed the identification of four DN subsets. The thymopoietic activity of these subsets was determined by use of the intrathymic repopulation assay.
