L'administration chronique de diphénylèneiodonium à des rats a entraîné une réduction, respectivement de 40 et 60% du taux in vitro de la respiration liée au NAD par les mitochondries du muscle squelettique. A la dose supérieure on a observé une fatigue musculaire, une acidose lactique et une surutilisation de phosphocréatine dans le muscle jumeau au cours d'une légère stimulation à la fréquence de 1 Hz. La resynthèse de la phosphocréatine après stimulation musculaire était 2 fois plus lente que normalement. A la dose faible on n'a pas observé de modifications biochimiques importantes au cours de la stimulation du muscle à 4 Hz.
