Lorsque des parents ont foncièrement échoué à symboliser des expériences de vie cruciales, leurs enfants sont soumis à des influences transgénérationnelles contradictoires qui déclenchent chez eux ce que N. Abraham nomme un «travail de fantôme». Cette activité biscornue et tenace du psychisme surstimule l'aspiration infantile normale à épauler ses géniteurs pour être aimé et compris d'eux. L'auteur examine les liens existant entre le travail d'un fantôme et l'imagination enfantine, l'intellectualisme, le désir, la sensation d'envahissement psychique et la socialisation. Il distingue également quelques étapes dans la cure analytique des porteurs de fantôme et situe enfin la théorie du fantôme parmi les différentes approches du « transgénérationnel ».
