The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a standard frankincense extract on the disease activity in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis or clinically isolated syndrome. On 28 patients monthly MRI were performed in a baseline-to-treatment pilot study and studied the number of the contrast-enhancing and the new T2 lesions as well as the volume oft the T2- and the contrast enhancing lesions. In addition the brain volumes loss was compared. There was a significant positive effect on disease activity during the treatment phase with a significant reduction of the number and volume of the contrast enhancing and T2 lesions. The brain volume was reduced in the baseline phase and to the contrary in the treatment phase as a possible sign for brain protection. In conclusion there were promising effects of frankincense extract on disease activity in multiple sclerosis with only minor side effects, which should be studied in further, larger cohorts with controlled study design.
