Based on an extensive collection of language data, recordings of Alsatian talk shows and news reports on the French TV channel France 3 Alsace (1994-95), the article discusses the question of code-switching in Alsatian dialect with respect to its classification as a "pidgin", a "creole" or a "mixed language". The frequent insertion of unadapted French lexical units or of French phrases in stretches of Alsatian discourse suggests the existence of a spoken variety which can be considered as a functional register characterized by the alternating use of the two contact languages, Alsatian and French, in a single speech act. Apart from the pragmatic aspects of code-switching, which are not discussed here, recent linguistic research has dealt with the question: where in the sentence is code-switching possible? Applying the principles of a code-switching grammar (cfr. Myers-Scotton 1993) to the materials, therefore the following analysis deals with the "language system", the rules, the regularities and probability of switches. Above all it focusses on the following problems: - distinction between code-switches and loans - typological classification of the switches with particular respect to triggers and grammatical constraints.
