In this paper, elaborating Saito's (1992) analysis of scrambling, I advance Epstein et al.'s (1998) derivational model of syntax with a new proposal that the formal properties of lexical items (including syntactic relations) are sent to the LF system as they become interpretable in the course of a derivation. Specifically, I argue that the formal features FF [NP] of NP enter into the interpetation upon the checking of its Case-feature. That is, the LF system is allowed to interpret FF [NP] as soon as CHL checks and deletes its Case-feature - the only uninterpretable feature associated with FF [NP].
