Les diverses circonstances de dislocation familiale peuvent constituer des événements stressants chez l'enfant et peuvent développer leur potentiel pathogène à distance. Un cas clinique, celui de Paul dont les parents ont divorcé à la suite d'une mésentente conjugale, a servi d'illustration à cette assertion. Ce cas a pour caractéristique principale l'absence d'imagos parentales complètes gages d'une identification harmonieuse et stable pour les enfants. Les pesanteurs socioculturelles découlant du patrilinéat et susceptibles de rendre plus vive la souffrance de l'enfant ont été mises en relief.
