Le psychiatre exerçant en milieu pénitentiaire, entouré de son équipe, peut mettre en oeuvre deux types de prises en charge : celles non polarisées sur l'infraction-symptôme et celles plus spécifiques. Celles-ci comprennent, dans un cadre juridique et symbolique bien défini, le traitement de fond, une aide au contrôle pulsionnel, des interventions soignantes individuelles ou de groupe et, éventuellement, une chimiothérapie. La mission de suivi post-pénal confiée au secteur de psychiatrie en milieu pénitentiaire permet la continuité des soins et le relais éventuel par d'autres structures compétentes.
