À l'aide d'un cas clinique qui présente deux somatisations successives, l'auteure s'attache à la valeur économique de chacune d'entre elles et aux transformations de l'équilibre psychosomatique: renforcement du masochisme érogène primaire pour la première, réveil psychique sur un corps « affecté » pour la seconde somatisation. Le passage du soma au corps et du corps aux affects vers la représentation évoque l'image d'un funambule, soumis à de multiples excitations venues de son monde interne comme du monde extérieur, mais toujours à la recherche d'un équilibre entre corps et psyché.
