Dans leur pratique quotidienne, les internes sont confrontés aux rapports entre la psychiatrie, le social et le politique. Les choix faits quant à la manière dont sont formés les futurs psychiatres sont en partie politiques: que doit savoir faire un psychiatre, quel est son champ d'action, quelle est son utilité sociale ? Nous avons voulu ici redécouvrir une histoire de la psychiatrie suivant les évolutions sociales et politiques de son temps pour mieux comprendre les réalités auxquelles nous sommes confrontés aujourd'hui, et préparer notre pratique de demain. Interrogeant les notions de santé mentale, de souffrance psychique et de souffrance sociale, nous questionnerons le rôle politique, notamment en tant qu'outil de contrôle social et de la psychiatrie. Il apparaît nécessaire d'aborder ces questions durant l'internat afin de mieux préparer les futurs psychiatres à leur pratique professionnelle.
