La fédération des métaux a été longtemps la première organisation de la CGT. Sa situation actuelle illustre la profondeur de la crise du syndicalisme français. A la libération, plus des deux tiers des métallos y adhéraient ; aujourd'hui, ils sont moins de 3%. Après avoir décrit le champ d'action de la FTM, l'évolution de ses effectifs, de son implantation régionale et de son audience aux élections professionnelles, cet article examine le fontionnement interne de l'organisation : depuis un demi-siècle, on assiste à l'émiettement des syndicats de base et à leur affaiblissement continu qui contraste avec l'ampleur des tâches qui leur sont théoriquement dévolues. A l'opposé, l'appareil fédéral a connu un développement important. Pourtant la fédération n'est jamais parvenue à intégrer les syndiqués des différentes firmes, branches et professions dans un ensemble cohérent.
