G. a démarqué Les Faux-Monnayeurs du reste de son oeuvre en l'appelant son «premier roman». Au moment où il tente de circonscrire la spécificité du roman pur, G. est aussi amené à reconnaître un principe d'hétérogénéité dans l'entreprise monamesque, qui met en question la distinction entre convention constructiviste et convention représentative, entre la loi du genre et sa transgression.
