DNA hexamer sequences with alternating CG bases form crystals as left-handed helices with the Z-conformation. Crystals of the hexamer d(CGTA'CG) where A' represents (2-NH2-A) are not isomorphous with other DNA nucleotides. Single isomorphous replacement with a triammine platinum reagent Pt(NH3)3 determines the structure of the hexamer. The binding of Pt(NH3)3 to a DNA hexamer will probably help understand the effectiveness of Pt-containing species as antitumor agents. The triammine platinum reagent can be used for the phasing of DNA crystal structures.
