"I've always been caught by that image in Rich's guide...for Silicon Valley", that showed the AMD campus down in Sunnyvale with an almost "star of bethlehem" above it, glowing across Silicon Valley. In the 1983 guide, it takes all of page 61 to show the image. While AMD was always just the scrappy younger company in the shadow of its bigger brother, Intel, throughout the 1970's and 1980's it had gained some traction. Like Intel, its founder was rooted in the legacy business, "Fairchild", and created a growing series of solid products, as well as a famously positive work environment. But it wouldn't be until the 2000's that AMD would reach its stride and begin to claim its place as a leader in CPU and GPU creation and production. But as all things change, AMD began to outgrow its old campus and sought to close down and redistribute their workers and talent to different sites (mostly San Jose). Fortunately, as the campus was decommissioned and shut down one of the facilities techs couldn't just throw everything into the dumpster. Mark took some things home in the last week that he just couldn't send to a landfill. One of those things was a framed print of that classic image from "Rich's guide". We went down to Capitola to visit and he was happy to see it finally going to a good home. In his enthusiasm he had printed out his last photo of the old Sunnyvale campus for AMD, and wrote a signed note on back testifying to it being the original poster from the old AMD campus. Aside from this one, I've never seen another. It's a bit faded, and still on a foamcore backing that it was framed with forty years ago. ut, yes, this is AMD's copy of the classic AMD poster... thanks to Mark Sabin, who couldn't throw it away.
