This thesis discusses an active control strategy for civil engineering structures under seismic loadings. Control forces generated by the stragetyare transmitted to the structure by the motion of a servo-controlled actuator. The acceleration of the controlled floors can be measured by accelerometers, and therelative floor velocity and the relative floor displacement can be obtained through integration of acceleration signals once and twice respectively. A combination of velocity feedback and balanced realization model reduction is found to lead a simplified model of the structure.Using singular value robustness criteria, the reduced model is proved to be satisfactory for the design of a LQG/LTR robust controller. The active structure controller design is then obtained through the following three steps:1)velocity feedback to damp important structure mode ;2)model reduction of structure with velocity feedback loop closed; and 3)LQG/LTR robust controller design. The three step design strategy and the issue of the controlled system robustness are also discussed in detail in this thesis.
