A Research on the Relationship of Academic Achievement with the Regional Differentials and Family Socio-economic Characteristics among the Freshmen of National High Schools in Tainan Area

The study research whether the academic achievement impacted by "family social-economic characteristics" and "regional differential" according to the students' scores on the Basic Competence Test for Junior High School Students. The study was a survey research. Cluster sampling from freshmen who entered national senior high schools in Tainan County and Tainan City based on their scores on the Basic Competence Test for Junior High School Students in 93 school year, one thousand one hundred and fourteen questionnaires were available. The findings are as follow: (1) The academic achievement of students who graduated in Tainan City is better than those graduated in Tainan County. (2) Family social-economic characteristics is an important factor that affects students' academic achievement. (3) Regional differential is an important factor that affects students' academic achievement. (4) The effect of family social-economic characteristics is stronger than the effect of regional differential. (5) the degrees of effect on academic achievement of students who graduated from Tainan County from their family social-economic characteristics are stronger than those graduated from Tainan City. (6) A significant difference exists in academic achievement of students who studied in various administration areas; however, there is no significant difference in academic achievement of students who studied in areas closed to each other.
