Taiwan is a small island with high population density. There is a high speedy trend toward industry and commerce along the rivers in these years. Excessive development caused domestic sewage, industrial wastewater, livestock wastewater, agricultural wastewater and rainwater erosion etc. threaten the environment. When sewage put into the rivers, the ecological environment of the rivers will be seriously destroyed by pollutants. Either on dealing with wastewater treatment or on recycling water resources, the application of wetland treatment technology is an economic and efficiency method. In this study, we evaluated efficiency of the constructed wetland, Her-Bao islet in Putiz River in Chiayi County. To investigate the degradation behavior of water pollution by pollutants from rivers, many water quality parameters, such as, pH, DO, BOD,SS, NH3-N, phosphate and anionic surfactants were examined. Current research indicates that photosynthesis of hydrophyte could increase the pH and dissolved oxygen of water. When the influent BOD concentration is smaller than 10 mg / L, there is no significant reduction, otherwise the average of reduction rate of BOD and ammonia are 45% and 54 %,respecfively. The efficiency was significant in the second and the third pool. The removal trends of ammonia and phosphate were similar. It was believed that both ammonia and phosphate were limited factors to each other. The limited factors could be set as the important nutrients to hydrophyte. Therefore, hydrophytes are useful for removing ammonia and phosphate. The average reduction rate of the phosphate was 24% in this study. The constructed wetland could treat anionic surfactants effectively. The average reduction rate was 43 %. Alkaline adversely removed anion surfactants and the neutral condition favored the removal of anionic surfactants.
