Street trees enhance the urban environment and living quality but may also bring certain hazards such as snap branches, collapsing trees that kill and other potential risk related. Thus, in order to detect and sort out hazardous trees to improving and enhance the safety of urban population, hazard detection and evaluation of trees should be done. In this study, visual tree assessment (VTA), a tool developed by C. Mattheck is opted. It is a highly recommended and time-saving risk assessment method, and survey was conducted for Taichung City parkway street trees. VTA is a physical assessment of tree base on biology and mechanical aspects of a tree. The biotic and abiotic factors involve and affect tree growth, from the root system and its growing environment up to the shoots of the tree crown will be reflected physically through the body language of a tree. The biological conditions affect trees health while the failure of the mechanical aspects will pose certain danger to people. In this study, trees which pose symptoms that is considered to be "threatening life and properties" will be the assessment target. Occurrence risk and the frequencies will be further developed as "risk index." The survey results shows that the highest risk plot is the area planted with Cinnamomum trees along Wen Xin Road, with a high risk index of 12.4; while Alstonia tree of plot C planted at Chung Hsing university green belt has a high potential risk of 12.2. Ficus trees with dangerous symptom like ‘hazardous dead branches’ ; Bauhinia trees have dangerous symptom like " unnatural tilting of trunk "; Cinnamomum and Terminalia trees with the dangerous symptom of "rotting and hollow tree trunk"; Alstonia, with dangerous symptom like " codominant stems "; Koelreuteria trees, with the dangerous symptoms of " trunk decay"; Pterocarpus trees with dangerous symptom of "codominant stems." Dangerous tree species surveys were carried out too. Alstonia trees, have the highest index of 30.4; while the Koelreuteria species, has the lowest index of 9.0. Risk index derived from VTA shows that " codominant stems ", comes with the alarming index of 82.8; while "weak root system" shows the lowest risk index, 8.
