Hakka Lion Dance – A Study on Cross-Generation Learning and Hakka Cultural Heritage

This study aims to explore the interaction process of cross-generation learning between grandparents and grandchildren through the cultural heritage activity of Hakka Lion Dance. Through the interview format, in-depth discussions were done on 7 grandparents, 1 instructor, and 1 homeroom teacher from students participating in the Hakka Lion Dance Team from an elementary school in Pingtung County. At the same time, focused group interview were done on all 26 team members of the Hakka Lion Dance team. After collecting the interview data, classification is done, and together with the relevant theories and literature for analysis and discussions. Below are the conclusions: 1. Hakka lion dance is characterized by a loud voices and sound, where the lion’s head represents generosity and positivity, demonstrating the bravery, plainness, and determination of Hakka culture. 2. The Hakka lion dance cultural heritage includes cross-generation support and encouragement, with serious teaching by the instructor and homeroom teachers and the cross-generation interactive process of students learning through hard work. 3. Important factors influencing cross-generation learning and Hakka cultural heritage includes the homework of students, the time factors, the provisioning of school grounds and administrative supporting procedures, community resources, and self-achievements by students. 4. The Hakka Lion Dance cultural heritage model includes the service orientation of elders (instructors) coaching younger generation. The field classification is the school approach and heritage approach as the main forms cross-generation learning models. The study on cross-generation learning of Hakka cultural heritage is still a new attempt. We hope that this study will attract more interested researcher and to provide vitality to research on this topic.
