Mélanie Hélène Bonis (1858~1937), by the name of Mel Bonis, was a female French composer. Though being opposed to study music by her family when she was young, she was recommended to study at Les Conservatoires à Rayonnement Régional (CRR) after her brilliant talent was recognized, therefore she embarked music on her career. The studying object of this thesis is Sonate pour Flûte et Piano, Op. 64 created by Mel Bonis in 1904. The first chapter introduction includes research purpose,literature review, reaserch limitation and the methods. The second chapter describes a short biography and composition style. It introduces her living background by exploring the influence of the whole environment on Bonis as a female composer. The third chapter is the analysis of Sonate pour Flûte et Piano, Op. 64 in aspects of form structure, motive development and rhythm. The fourth chapter raises the view of interpretation to the composition. In the conclusion, it summarizes the personality and the time which had influence on Mel Bonis. It presents the whole feature and characteristic of Sonate pour Flûte et Piano, Op. 64.
