Chinese herb medicines (CHM) had traditionally played a major role in the management of human health. Rhodiola rosea, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Epimedium brevicornum Maxim and Panax notoginsengare well known CHM. Some reported that Rhodiola rosea is commonly using for the treatment of antidepressants; Salvia miltiorrhiza, Epimedium brevicornum Maxim and Panax notoginsengcan enhance immunity and treatment for cardiovascular disease. These CHM contains a great number of functional components, and have strong physiological activities. The objective of this study were to investigate the extraction variables (extract method and ethanol concentration); and investigate the relationship between functional components; antioxidant activity and enzyme inhibitory activity from four CHM.In the study, the four CHM powders were extracted with water, 50% ethanol and 95% ethanol by stir or ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), respectively. Solubility, functional components, antioxidant activities, α-glucosidase and lipase inhibition of the extracts were tested. The results showed that the color in ethanol extracts of four CHM were darker than the others, and had good solubility in water. Rhodiola rosea had the highest total phenolic content 274.40 ± 2.18 μg/mg gallic acid equivalents; Salvia miltiorrhiza had the highest total flavonoid content. The antioxidant activities of four CHM extracted by ethanol were better than water. Rhodiola rosea had the highest effected in α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, and its IC50 value was 0.12 ± 0.02 to 1.44 ± 0.01 μg/mg; Salvia miltiorrhiza had the highest effected in lipase inhibitory activity. When concentration in 100μg/mL, the inhibitory activity was achieved 76%. In addition, the results of extracts from four CHM by UAE is similar with stir (p> 0.05). UAE is one of the most inexpensive, simple, rapid, and efficient extraction techniques compared with conventional extraction and has been applied to extract functional compounds from different materials. In the future, the UAE technology has been used in food industry.
